A massive part of succeeding in fantasy football is playing the match-ups and setting the right lineup. Obviously there are some players, like Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell, that should never be left on your bench no matter their opponent, but for most this is not the case. Below are my picks for who you should start and who you should sit this week at each position.
Quarterbacks Start Trevor Siemian v OAK Oakland gave up 365 passing yards to Kirk Cousins last week and I expect to see Siemian have his season high passing total this week against a tepid Raiders defence. Trev played much better than expected through the first two weeks and despite having a poor game last week, he's set to bounce back as he returns to home turf in Week 4. Sit Cam Newton v NE It's easy to get sucked into matchups and a see that the Patriots give up the most points to opposing QB's but don't let that fool you into thinking the Cam will have an easy day in Foxborough. Newton hasn't looked right so far this year following his offseason shoulder surgery and until I see him looking healthier, I'm keeping Cam out of my lineup no matter who he's playing. Running Backs Start Joe Mixon v CLE I know it was only one game but Mixon is finally trending upwards and getting close to the number of carries he deserves. The talent is unquestionable and I'm predicting a break out week for the rookie against a Browns team that looks to be heading to yet another awful season. Sit Marshawn Lynch v DEN The Denver run defence looks almost as good as their pass defence this year and even managed to hold Zeke Elliott to under 10 yards rushing just a few weeks ago. To make a long story short, Beast Mode is going to struggle this week, refrain from starting him. Wide Receivers Start Adam Thielen v DET While Diggs gets all the headlines due to his touchdowns, Thielen actually has more receptions AND more yards than his teammate and with a relatively good matchup against the Lions, Thielen is a PPR must start this week. Sit T.Y. Hilton v SEA As tempting as it will be to play Hilton this week after he finally put up good numbers in Week 3, but you have to remember that it was against Cleveland. I know the Seahawks haven't looked as good as expected so far this season but they're still a huge step up from the Browns and I can't see T.Y. making you happy this week. Tight Ends Start Jason Witten v LAR Tight end has been the hardest position to predict so far this year, which is often the case, and this week is no different. However I do expect Witten to have a solid game against the Rams and hopefully pick up a touchdown. Sit Marcedes Lewis v NYJ Last week was an anomaly, don't do it.

Each week Dan Barber, Fergus Head, Reece Mowlem and Owen Turner pick one team who is a lock and certain to win their game and one team who will cause a shock and win their game despite being the underdog. Below are this week's picks.
Dan Barber Lock: FALCONS over Bills What the f*** happened in the NFL last week. It was as though we entered some parallel universe where the normal rules of football didn't apply. For a start the Jets picked me up a win in my team of teams - a win I never thought I'd get. I digress. The Falcons will beat the Bills this week. They have too much firepower against a questionable Bills team. I expect them to continue their unbeaten streak. Shock: JETS over Jaguars Now I know I just called last week a parallel universe, but I'm gonna go bold. The Jags absolutely dominated the Ravens last week to the point of embarrassment. They do have the unfortunate task of travelling back from London to the play the next week however, something that teams don't usually have to do, because they get a bye. Perhaps the Jags will be brimming with confidence this week, expecting to walk in and wipe the floor with the New York Pushovers. Something tells me it might not be so simple. But then again, perhaps things will return to normality this week. Who knows? Fergus Head Lock: FALCONS over Bills Falcons beat the Bills in a game where Matt Ryan throws for over 400 yards for the first time this season. He bounces back in a big way against a solid team, who have just come off the back of beating one of the best teams in the league. Shock: REDSKINS over Chiefs Redskins beat the second AFC West team in as many weeks, shocking the football world with their sneaky defense again, holding Kareem Hunt to his first game under 100 scrimmage yards. Shocks, after last week, appear to be easier to predict than locks... Reece Mowlem Lock: PATRIOTS over Panthers I actually found it difficult picking a lock this as last week has just thrown everything up in the air. New England didn't look great against the Texans on Sunday, but I think they'll have it easier this week as a shaky Cam Newton roles into town without a couple of his main offensive weapons. Oh and Tom Brady will throw for 400 yards again (probably). Shock: CHARGERS over Eagles Philly were my lock last week and thanks to a monster kick from Jake Elliott, I was proved correct. This week, however, I'm not as confident in the Eagles as they travel to Los Angeles to face a Chargers team without a lot to prove. Add to this that the Eagles are missing quite a few key players through injury and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Chargers break their losing streak. Owen Turner Lock: PACKERS over Bears For the second week in a row I'm going for my Green Bay lock. Was a close run with the Bengals for them last week with overtime required to keep my 100% run going. The Bears had a great win against the Steelers last week but they don't stand a chance against a superior team on the road. Shock: RAMS over Cowboys There are a lot of even looking games throughout the NFL this week, so it was difficult to identify possibilities for actual shocks. I've settled on the Rams beating the Cowboys as the most likely outcome. This is mainly due to the performances of the Rams offense this season, with Goff easing some of the bust concerns to rest and Todd Gurley returning to form. The Cowboys haven't been that impressive this year, especially the beating they took from the Broncos in Week 2. I think if the Rams focus in on stopping Zeke and force Prescott to put up 20 points, I reckon the Rams come through with the win. (side note brag, it's one thing to be 100% in Locks, but in Shocks it's damn impressive... Congrats me) This season I have decided to pick the winner of every regular season game each week and then keep a tally of my correct predictions throughout the year.
For each game my projected winner is in BOLD. Current Record: 38-25 Week 4 Games Chicago at GREEN BAY NEW ORLEANS vs Miami Buffalo at ATLANTA BENGALS at Browns Rams at COWBOYS LIONS at Vikings Panthers at PATRIOTS JAGUARS at Jets STEELERS at Ravens TITANS at Texans 49ERS at Cardinals Eagles at CHARGERS GIANTS at Buccaneers Raiders at BRONCOS Colts at SEAHAWKS Redskins at CHIEFS Each week Dan Barber, Fergus Head, Reece Mowlem and Owen Turner pick one team who is a lock and certain to win their game and one team who will cause a shock and win their game despite being the underdog. Below are this week's picks.
Dan Barber Lock: STEELERS over Bears The Steelers are only getting started this year and haven't had too much to do in the first couple of games, beating the Browns and a Bradford-less Vikings. I don't expect much to change in this game against a team that got shredded by the Buccaneers last week. The Steelers are my lock. Shock: SAINTS over Panthers I found it difficult to choose a shock this week, but I've eventually settled for the Saints getting their season back on track over the Panthers. There's been a lot of talk of late about the strength of the Panthers defence, but we're yet to see them compete against an actually decent offence - the 49ers and Bills are hardly lighting the league up this year. I'm calling for Drew Brees and Co to gradually slice through the Panthers defence and come away with a victory. With Cam Newton still struggling through an injury, and having lost Greg Olsen for an extended period of time, I can't see the Panthers putting up much of a fight on offence, even against a shoddy Saints defence. Fergus Head Lock: RAIDERS over Redskins Raiders continue their versatile offensive play against a very mediocre D.C. They show again in week 3 that they are up for the chase this year, with an extremely mature Derek Carr leading the way. A 24-9 win, sealed by Beast Mode running out the clock in the fourth and breaking 100 yards. Shock: TITANS over Seahawks Titans show up a Seahawks team that has stalled so far this year. Derrick Henry proves himself as the starting running back, taking more than 60% of the handoffs over the ageing Demarco Murray. Mariota proves himself as the real deal against a still strong Seahawks defence and the 'Hawks die an ugly death at the hands of some real smashmouth football. Reece Mowlem Lock: EAGLES over Giants My absolute confidence in the Eagles getting a win against the Giants all comes to down to one matchup; the Eagles defensive line against the Giants offensive line. Philly's front seven has been one of the best over the first two weeks of the season and fully expect them to wreak havoc against one of the worst O-Lines in the league. Add to this that Wentz and the offence also look to be in full flow, it should be a comfortable victory for Philadelphia. Shock: JAGUARS over Ravens The Jags have made Wembley their second home these past few years and despite a poor second half performance against the Titans last week, I'm tipping Jacksonville to bounce back and get a win in London. Owen Turner Lock: PACKERS over Bengals After the total 'shock' defeat for Green Bay in Atlanta, they will be looking to bounce back on home turf. The offense looked lost without Jordy Nelson (no comment on the fantasy outcomes due to that injury) but it's good to see he's back in full participation at practice. The Bengals on the other hand, they've been total garbage, sorry Ferg... Dalton looks baffled by everything he sees and the offense has been too predictable. Maybe the change of offensive coordinator will help but that will probably take time. Can't see a team that has been that bad in the first two games, both at home it's worth noting, beating this Green Bay squad on the road. Pack bounce back. Shock: BEARS over Steelers I'm 2-0 on my shock predictions, at least something I'm doing is going well! Forget all the technical c**p about being lower in one blokes opinion on NFL.com, we want a shock to make you say DAMN... Was gonna go for Jets over Dolphins here to ram home a point, but sometimes we can go too far. Supporting the Jets, ewww... Anyway I've gone for the Bears not for the Bears, but because of the Steelers (am going to town on your teams here guys, sorry). Every damn year we hear, 'the Steelers are going to challenge the Patriots', or 'this offense can't be stopped'. Never works out... This year they've managed to two wins against a Minnesota team at home without Sam Bradford, and scrape a win against a Browns team without... Well... It's the Browns so it doesn't matter if they had a full contingent anyway. Been unimpressed so far and the Bears, at home, who looked good against the Falcons a few weeks ago, may pull out the shock here. And I use shock correctly, not just as a rhyme.
Quarterbacks Start Jay Cutler v NYJ I never thought I'd be telling people to start Cutler but it looks like I just might be. Okay, maybe don't start him over Derek Carr or Matt Ryan, but I think Jay could have a solid game against a weak Jets team, making him a great streaming option this week. Sit Andy Dalton v GB After his first two weeks it should be a given that Dalton shouldn't be in your lineup, however some people might be hoping for a bounce back. Well I can tell you that it won't be happening this week. Green Bay's defensive front destroyed the less than impressive Seahawks O-Line in Week 1 and I can see Mike Daniel's and the gang causing big problems to a similarly bad Bengals offensive line this week. Leave Andy alone until further notice. Running Backs Start Ty Montgomery v CIN Montgomery was my must start running back last week and I will happily give him that title again in Week 3. The game script is likely to be positive for Ty coming up against a Bengals team in turmoil and I have no doubts that he'll be an RB1 this week. Sit Ameer Abdullah v ATL I have a feeling Atlanta are going to get a good lead early in this contest, forcing Stafford and the Lions to quickly abandon a run game they don't have much confidence in in the first place. This will leave Abdullah starved of touches as Riddick continues to see the bulk of the passing work. Abdullah is a flex option at best. Wide Receivers Start Doug Baldwin v TEN This is going to be the breakout week for angry Doug, it has to be. Baldwin has has suffered massively from the lack of quality on the Seahawks offensive line as it's forced Russell Wilson to spend most of his time scrambling around the field instead of looking for his number one target. With a matchup against the Titans, a team without a particularly special pass rush or secondary, I can see Baldwin putting up WR1 numbers and hopefully pull in a touchdown. Sit Larry Fitzgerald v DAL I know the matchup looks good on paper but Carson Palmer targeted both Jaron Brown and J.J. Nelson more than Larry Fitzgerald against the Colts last week and until I see anything change in Arizona, Fitz won't be gracing my lineup. Tight Ends Start Eric Ebron v ATL I can't really explain this one, I just have a strange feeling Ebron's going to get a touchdown or two this week. Sit Evan Engram v PHI The rookie tight end has been Eli's most reliable target through the first two weeks but I expect that to change against the Eagles. The Philly front seven will have Manning on the ground before he even has a chance to look up and throw the perfect seam pass to Engram, so leave him on your bench this week. |
